The acticom robust header compression software module, an implementation of the RFC 3095, offers an efficient transmission of IP multimedia data over wireless links. One of the key features of acticom's software module is in its consideration of mobile devices with limited processing and memory capabilities.

Robust header compression (ROHC) supports the efficient use of scarce wireless resources for multimedia data with real-time constraints. Reducing the overhead of IP-based headers in packet-oriented communication networks significantly improves performance, especially for multimedia data services such as audio or video transmissions. Thus, by employing ROHC, 2.5G and 3G network operators will be able to increase the amount of resources available to their customers, resulting in an improved "return on investment". Robust header compression was standardized by the Internet Engineering Task Force in RFC 3095 and will be an integral part of release 4 and 5 of the 3GPP-UMTS specification. The efficient transport of multimedia data over packet-oriented (wireless) data networks has gained much interest in recent years. To meet the requirements in terms of delay, jitter, and latency for interactive communication, e.g. Voice-over-IP, sampling and packetization delays must be minimized. When using the Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP) and RTP/UDP/IP header for encapsulating voice samples, the ratio between the RTP/UDP/IP header and payload size is typically 2:1 (or 3:1 for IPv6), thus there is a significant overhead and waste of resources. ROHC uses a connection oriented approach to remove packet inter- and intra-dependencies and thus reduces header-payload significantly. In a multimedia scenario with real-time voice services and IPv6, the overall bandwidth can be reduced by a factor of four. The error characteristics on wireless links differ dramatically from wired links. ROHC was designed to operate in error-prone environments by providing error detection and correction mechanisms combined with robustness for IP based data streams.

acticom offers Robust Header Compression ROHC as either source code release or binary executable. There are different licensing models available for both source and binary packages to give customers the opportunity to buy the software package suitable for their needs. acticom ROHC licensing models are available.
